Inertial Reference System (IRS)

The IRS system sensor is another highly accurate position sensor. IRS is most commonly used on larger aircraft.

IRS systems use ring lasers to calculate position and are independent of any outside source information.

An FMS system will typically use information from more than one IRS to calculate a more precise postion.
