FMS systems are capable of interfacing with a collection of sensors which provide navigation data used to calculate position.

Inputs from each "active" sensor is combined and summed up to provide the best possible position data. Sensors that fall beyond a predetermined accuracy level are either given less authority or deleted from the equation altogether. Message alerts are displayed to pliots alerting them of any discrepancies in navigation performance. Each manufacturer is unique in alerting the flight crew.
